Sullivan Family 2010

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH SARAH ...

Sarah Sullivan, a sticker candidate for State Representative of the 17th Suffolk District is a senior at Boston University and a resident of Allston.

Sarah is passionate about public service. She interned at the State House with the Massachusetts Senate President for two academic years. As a constituent services intern, Sarah learned how public servants connect with everyday citizens to make a stronger Massachusetts. This knowledge expanded upon Sarah’s prior experience with Florida Congressman Michael Bilirakis, with whom she interned with on Capitol Hill. From these experiences, Sarah has gained an appreciation for the necessity of clear communication between public servants and constituents.

Sarah is a dedicated, creative leader. During her first year at Boston University, Sarah was instrumental in
forming BU’s Women’s Resource Center, one of the only completely volunteer-run centers in the nation.
When the center opened in the Fall of her sophomore year, Sarah served on the inaugural board and was
essential in building the center from the ground up. With a limited budget and no paid-staff members,
the Women’s Center benefited from the creative solutions Sarah invented to overcome these challenges.

As a junior, Sarah went on to become the Co-director of the center, leading the group to receive recognition
from the Feminist Majority Foundation, an international women’s organization. Due to her efforts with the
Women’s Resource Center, as well as her leadership as a Dean’s Host and her membership on the student
board of the Howard Gotlieb Archives, Sarah was named BU’s Emerging Student Leader during the
Spring of her sophomore year.

Sarah is an engaged, compassionate listener. She is able to negotiate multiple and diverse opinions and ideas.
This ability has helped her succeed academically. At Boston University, Sarah ranks in the top 5% of her class
in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Outside of the classroom, she listens carefully when studying the local history of the neighborhoods
in Boston and engaging with local residents in Allston-Brighton, her home.

Sarah will continue to study the issues facing Allston-Brighton as well as listen to the needs and opinions
of neighborhood residents with the same fervor and enthusiasm as she has inside the classroom.

Sarah understands the importance of community service. A lifetime member of the Girl Scouts,
Sarah’s commitment to community building as a teenager earned her the highest award in Girl Scouts,
the Gold Award. When Sarah moved to Boston to attend university, she brought enthusiasm for
community building with her. As a student of sociology, specializing in urban planning and development,
Sarah has spent her time studying the elements that make communities successful. Sarah takes this passion
for community development outside of the classroom. She has used her spring breaks to volunteer in local
communities across the country through BU’s Alternative Spring Break program.

Because of her dedication to service, Sarah has made community service central to this campaign.

Sarah is not only a dedicated, community-minded leader, she is also a balanced, thoughtful individual.
Sarah grew up with a background in the performance arts. She attended Blake High School of the Arts
as a modern dance major and continues to pursue her love of modern dance at BU. Sarah is an avid reader
whose fascination with public libraries led her to intern at the Humanities and Social Sciences Branch of the
New York Public Library during the summer of 2008. Sarah is the daughter of Tampa, Florida community activists, Kay and John Sullivan. She has one sister, Katharine, 27, an aspiring theatre producer in Manhattan, and brother, Sergey, 10, whom her family adopted from Vladivostok, Russia in 2006.
