WHY SARAH ...

As a leader within her university community,
an intern at the State House, and a concerned resident of Allston, Sarah feels a disconnect between university students and long-time residents. Sarah, a sticker candidate for State Representative, is committed to bridging this divide, increasing university students’ participation in state government, and creating
a stronger, more unified Allston-Brighton.

1. SARAH PROVIDES
a student perspective

Universities and university students are a defining feature of Allston-Brighton and the Commonwealth’s economy, population,
and character. These institutions and young people fuel our local and state economies, providing a continuous source of revenue. Students account for an enormous percentage
of our population; of the roughly 600,000 people in Boston, about 150,000 are university students. They enhance the character of Allston-Brighton and act as a symbol of Massachusetts’ diversity, creativity, and innovation.

Massachusetts needs a leader who speaks to current Massachusetts university students, understands the unique challenges facing them, and offers creative solutions for strengthening
the relationship between students and the Commonwealth. Massachuetts needs
the student perspective of Sarah Sullivan.

2. SARAH WILL WORK
to create jobs in the Commonwealth

The current recession has left no state unharmed. Although Massachusetts is moving out of this recession more quickly than some states, Massachusetts citizens and businesses are still being forced to tighten their belts and make tough financial decisions. Addressing this issue is essential to improving our state. Thankfully, Massachusetts has a unique renewable resource that can help the state create jobs and jumpstart the economy: students.

Every fall, the best minds in the nation flock to Massachusetts for university, yet every spring, graduates leave at an alarming rate. These students are not only the best and the brightest, they also have a diverse and dynamic set of skills, interests, and talents. From engineering to history, journalism to the arts, these students study the professions necessary for a diverse, sustainable economy. Sarah believes addressing this issue is key to tackling our toughest economic problems. Sarah will support legislation that encourages students to stay in Massachusetts. Sarah will work to connect students with Massachusetts businesses and industries before they graduate. Sarah will support initiatives that ease students’ transition out of university and into the Massachusetts workforce. She will support measures that encourage students to start businesses here in the Commonwealth, creating jobs for all Massachusetts residents. Massachusetts needs a leader who thinks creatively about our economy, recognizes the unique resources the Commonwealth has, and uses these resources to accelerate our economy’s growth. Massachusetts needs the vision for a sustainable economy of Sarah Sullivan.

3. SARAH WILL FOCUS
on unifying Allston-Brighton

In Allston-Brighton, long-time residents and university
students often have very different lifestyles. Where
long-time residents have put down roots in the
community, own businesses, and raise families, students
and recent graduates reside for a handful of years and are primarily involved in campus communities. While these
groups often seem at odds with each other, Sarah believes
that both groups are essential to the character of this neighborhood. For this reason, Sarah will work
toward a unified Allston-Brighton.

Sarah will work to encourage students to take a greater
stake in their community while also encouraging long-time residents to get to know new community members. Sarah
is committed to ameliorating the causes of tension between these groups. While young people often complain that they must stay home because there is little to do if under 21,
long-time residents may think these students are too loud
in their homes. Sarah will work to increase 18 and up
late-night venues such as, coffee shops, bowling allies,
and pool halls. This alternative to “house parties”
will provide young people with something to do at night, minimize the pervasiveness of late-night events in
the residential community, and
reduce the disturbance of young peoples’ late-night
activities on long-time residents and families.

Allston-Brighton needs a leader who is willing to tackle the tensions between long-time residents and young people, consider the interests of all community members, and
work toward a unified Allston-Brighton.

Sarah has a vision of Massachusetts and Allston-Brighton
that captures the student perspective in the Legislature, maximizes Massachusetts’ unique resources, and encourages students, young people, and long-time residents to work together for a stronger, more unified Allston-Brighton.

If you support this vision, show it at the polls
on September 14, 2010 and place your
Sarah Sullivan sticker on the ballot
for Representative.
